Kirimochi is made from glutinous rice moulded in square/rectangle shapes, making it ideal for cooking and baking. The mochi rice cakes are firm when uncooked, but have a distinctive mellow chewiness when cooked.

It can be easily warmed in the microwave until soft and gooey, baked in the oven until puffy and browned or even toasted in a waffle maker for a unique shape. It is used in a variety of preparations such as Ozoni Soup during the Japanese New Year celebrations or topped with sweet condiments for a dessert.
